Program(s) Available: B.A., B.S., Minor
Do you enjoy combining substances and watching how they interact with one another? Do you see your future self in a lab coat? Look no further, future Bearcat. Northwest has the perfect lab for you!
At Northwest, chemistry students gain practical laboratory experience and foundational knowledge in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry. Students can choose a chemistry degree that is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) or emphasize in general chemistry, biochemistry.
The general chemistry major allows students to select electives that suit their individual interests. Many students choose to double major in chemistry and another area, such as geology, agronomy or biology.
The biochemistry emphasis focuses on compounds in living systems including their composition, properties and chemical reactions, to understand the structure and function of biological systems. The cross-discipline curriculum in biology and chemistry trains students to be competitive in the rapidly expanding biotechnology field.
The ACS-certified major in chemistry provides students with deep exposure to the many aspects of chemistry. Students are intellectually challenged and gain an appreciation for how chemistry impacts their daily lives. This nationally recognized degree is designed to prepare students for a research career.
Minor programs in chemistry are available. A minor in chemistry teaches students the foundations of college algebra, physics and chemistry. This minor requires the completion of 24 credit hours.
A minor in biochemistry teaches students the foundations of college algebra, biology and plant science. This minor requires the completion of 28 credit hours.
